Biography: Collector's mark in the shape of a trefoil leaf, printed in black ink. This mark appears on all (or almost all) the Hogarth prints purchased by the BM at the sale of the duplicates of H P Standly (qv) in February 1826, and on a few other Hogarth-related prints acquired at later dates. It does not seem to be found on any of the Hogarth prints purchased directly by the BM from Standly in 1825, or on many (or any?) of the Hogarths included in his posthumous sale in 1845. This suggests that the mark belonged to an earlier collection that Standly had purchased in c.1825. Sheila O'Connell has drawn attention to Nichols ('Anecdotes of Hogarth' 1833 ed. p.409), who in a list of Hogarth collectors includes "Mr P. Moore of Goswell Street. His collection was bought by Mr Standly, who after he had retained what he wanted, sold the duplicates at Stewart and Wheatley's, Feb. 24 1825". The mark therefore seems to belong to Nichols' Mr P. Moore. The situation is complicated by a sale at Sotheby's on 21st August 1856 of the 'highly interesting and important collection of the works of William Hogarth' belonging to Philip Moore Esq. A significant number of Hogarth-related prints purchased by the BM from Evans in April 1858 seem to have come from this sale, and most of them have the Lugt 2844a mark. So it appears that the original Philip Moore of 1825 had retained some of his Hogarth collection, or had subsequently bought new ones. To judge from the low prices in the 1856 sale, it was probably the former. It is possible that the Philip Moore of 1856 was a son of a father of the same name, and had inherited the collection. In either event, the trefoil mark Lugt 2844, which Lugt carefully distinguishes from 2844a, and assigns to an unidentified 'Philip Moore' seems almost certainly in reality to be the same mark as 2844a.
