Biography: Pioneer historian of Spanish art, and book collector. Succeeded to his the title and estates of his uncle, Sir John Maxwell, in 1865 when he took the surname Maxwell. His important library of emblem books and other material was left to the University of Glasgow by his son Sir John Stirling Maxwell (q.v.). His albums of prints after Spanish masters were sold at Christie's 28 April 1978, lots 174ff. Photos of them all are in the Warburg Institute library.
