- War correspondent and photographer, polar explorer, naturalist, geographer, climatologist and aviator. Born in South Australia. In 1923 commissioned by the trustees of the British Museum to collect specimens of the rarer native fauna, principally mammals from Northern Australia. In addition to mammals, during a two and half year period (1923-1925) Wilkins collected a range of plants, birds, insects, fish, minerals, fossils and Aboriginal artefacts, notably at Groote Eylandt January to April 1925 and at Crocodile Island August to December 1924.
