- Biography
- Anthropologist, archaeologist and collector; born in Yorkshire; attended Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst; commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1845. Fought in the Crimean War, served in Malta, England, Canada and Ireland. Retired in 1882, with honorary rank of Lieutenant-General. In 1880 he unexpectedly inherited the Rivers estate and name from his great uncle, also a large annual income. Appointed the first Inspector of Ancient Monuments in 1882. In 1884 gave his collection of over 20,000 objects to the University of Oxford, now in the Pitt Rivers Museum (q.v.).
