Octavius Morgan

Life dates: 1803-1888
Biography: Collector, antiquary. Educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford (matriculated in 1822, BA 1825, MA 1832). He was elected FSA in 1830 and FRS in 1832. From 1840 to 1874 he was the Conservative MP for the county of Monmouth (1840-74). President of the Caerleon Antiquarian Association. Morgan bequeathed his collection of clocks, astronomical instruments, and papal rings to the British Museum. A W Franks was a close friend and recorded that 'Mr Morgan consulted me specially as to his bequests'. His working manuscripts, transcripts of extents and charters, pedigrees, notes and drafts of articles, sketches, and translations of Welsh poetry, together with his scholarly, scientific, and political correspondence are in the National Library of Wales.
