Biography: Served in the British Army 1948-1950. Educated at Cambridge University. Lectured at the London School of Economic 1961-1973. Undertook fieldwork among the Abelam people of Papua New Guinea between 1958 and 1963 and in Bali 1972-1973. Foundation Professor of Anthropology at the Australian National University, from 1974. Editor of 'Primitive Art and Society' 1973. Collected Balinese paintings, now housed at The Australian Museum, Sydney. Sold a house-post from Papua New Guinea to the Museum in 1964 (Oc1964,06.1). Slides from 1958 field trip held at British Museum.
