- Print publisher and bookseller, particularly associated with the engraver Thomas Milton (q.v.); prints occassionally signed 'I Walter'. Trade card in Heal Collection (Heal,17.163) advertises "J Walter (from Mr. Dodsley's) Bookseller, at Homer's Head, Charing Cross. Sells books in all languages & sciences and stationary wares of all sorts." The verso is dated "Nov. 10, 1768." Heal's annotations on mount: "See billhead in A.H. collection at above 1790. Hilton-Prices in 'Signs of the Strand' gives Mr Walter 1761. See imprint in A.H. collection, at the above address dated 1790. John Walter, bookseller, was one of the executors of the will of James Dodsley, bookseller of Pall Mall, who died in 1797 leaving a legacy of £1000 to John Walter (see Timperley p.794). A billhead of J. Walter, bookseller, at Homer's Head, Charing Cross dated 1788 is in the Wedgewood collection. Plomer's 'Dictionary of Booksellers, 1726-1775' gives John Walter: (1) Homer's Head, Charing Cross (2) Corner of Spring Gardens, 1750-1803. He died 25 July, 1803."
