Biography: Inherited £250,000 from his father, a loan contractor. Connoisseur and collector of prints and books which he collected on an enormous scale - 'his indolence equalled his extravagance' and he stayed in bed so long as to lose his Parliamentary seat for Poole in 1784. He had to sell his books in 1784. His prints were sold over 40 days from 16.i to 15.iii.1786. He died on 16.vii.1786, 'overwhelmed by cares'. His Commonplace Book, "The Effusions of Fancy and Fun", 1784, is in the Lewis Walpole Library (Yale University).
