Biography: Painter. Born in Kyoto. Founder of the Shijō school. Member of a family that had served as officials in the gold mint and currency exchange in Kyoto for many generations but in the late 1770s left that position to become a painter. In Kyoto first studied painting under Onishi Suigetsu, a student of Mochizuki Gyokusen, then studied painting and haikai poetry under Yosa Buson (q.v.) His family name (sei) was Matsumura, his given name (na) was Toyomasa, and his adult name (azana) was Yūho, later called Hakubō and Bunzō. In addition to Katen, his artist names (gō) included Inpaku and Sonseki among others. Also known as "Matsumura Gekkei " and used the name Gekkei throughout his life. His wife and father died in 1781 (Tenmei l), and he moved to Ikeda (Osaka Prefecture) on the advice of Buson. The following year, he celebrated the New Year (early spring) in Kureha-no-sato (the ancient name of Ikeda), and changed his name to Go Shun. After Buson's death, returned to Kyoto to study the painting style of Ōkyo, and established a style that combined literati painting and sketching. Called a ‘Shijō school’ painter because he settled in Shijō, Kyoto. (Hirai)
