Biography: Painter. Gan Rei was a third-generation member (the second son of Gan Tai, 1785-1865) of the familial Gan (or Kishi) school which was founded by Gan Ku (1749-1838). He participated in the decoration of the rebuilt imperial palace during the Ansei era (1854-60), and moved to Tokyo shortly after the Meiji Restoration of 1868.
