Biography: Architect, born in Paris; studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for Architecture, 1866, residing at the Villa Medici in Rome, 1867-1870. Served briefly in the Franco-Prussian War, then returned to Paris to assist Hector Lefuel with the restoration of the Louvre. In 1875, appointed architect for the Bibliothèque Nationale. Other work includes monuments throughout France and the residence and studio of French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau in Paris. In 1914, awarded a gold medal by both the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
