Biography: Born in 1958 in Tokyo. The artist has received worldwide recognition for his sculptural works in glass. Kano is the 5th generation descendent of Kano Tomonobu, the head of the Edo (Tokyo)-based branch of the Kano School of Japanese painters at the end of the Edo period and early Meiji era (later 19th-century). Kano first studied Nihonga painting in university. Although born into a family of historic significance in the world of painting, the artist discovered his passion for artistic creation in the medium of in glass. Kano studied techniques of glass art at Tokyo Glass Art Institute, Kanagawa, Japan, from April 1990 to March 1992, after which he secured a scholarship to study coldworking and cutting techniques at Pilchuck Glass School. Seatle, U.S.A. Kano's works are in the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, Japan; La Granja Royal Glass Museum, San Ildefonso, Spain; Kitazawa Museums of Art, Nagano, Japan; Myoshinji Temple Kyoto, Japan; and Shanghai Museum of Glass Art, Shanghai, China. Kano lives in Tokyo and runs a school to teach glass art techniques.
