Reason: Temporary Exhibition; Examination
Description: No treatment required. Support and media examined in detail using magnification, transmitted light and raking light in preparation for the exhibition 'Fra Angelico to Leonardo: Italian Renaissance Drawings'. * Treatment details transferred from a 1978 treatment record card: Condition: Top right and bottom right corners made up with ill-fitting paper patches. Eight or nine small tears around edge of paper. Has been laid onto a sheet of white laid paper. Several holes in the paper show the backing sheet underneath, notably two (6mm and 7mm across) in the neck. Some lead white highlights on body armour blackened; also blackened lead white patch near Warrior's ear and around a hole in the helmet. Surface of drawing generally rather rubbed. Treatment: Lifted drawing from backboard to which it was guarded. Guard paper removed dry with a scalpel. Treated blackened white lead with etheral hydrgen peroxide (20vols). Responded well in all areas. Inlaid drawing in 1-43 using Cellofas B 3'500 adhesive. Mounted in 4ply board.
