Treatment; 02 Nov 2009; Cleaning and removal of tarnish.; Metals

Reason: Permanent Exhibition
Description: The dust and dirt were removed by rinsing in tap water, the spoon was then dried w/ tissue paper. The tarnish was removed w/ cotton wool swabs of White Spirit, then of Acetone, and then of IMS. Yellowish residues (probably residues of lacquer incompletely removed by a previous conservation treatment ?) appeared during cleaning under microscope and were further removed by continued application of solvent. The brown dense material (probably silver chloride corrosion) was not removed by solvent. It was decided not to try a stronger treatment as this material is located on the bottom of the object and as it is a material difficult to remove. The number was rewritten w/ black magic ink applied with a brush, directly on the metal.
