Description
The surface of the shirt was vacuum cleaned using a low powered vacuum cleaner and a soft sable brush. The loose quills were secured using a 40% solution of Mowilith 50 (polyvinyl acetate) in acetone. The adhesive was applied at the tip of the quills to be secured using a small spatula carved out of a bamboo skewer. Light pressure was applied with a finger until the adhesive was set (very quick due to the high tackiness of the adhesive and to the fast evaporation rate of the acetone). The leather tears and weakened areas were secured using mulberry paper bridges coloured with watercolours (trade name: Schmincke) to colour match the leather. The paper bridges were applied with a mixture of Lascaux 498 HV and Lascaux 360 HV [3:1] (both water dispersion of butyl methacrylate copolymer and thickened with butyl polyacrylate (or acrylic butylester) diluted in water [1:1]. The adhesive was applied by brush on the paper then left to dry. Strips of the required size were cut and placed on the leather, then reactivated with acetone on a blotting paper through a layer of Goretex (polytetrafluoro ethylene, polyester laminate).
