Reason: Temporary Exhibition; Loan; Examination
Description: Support and media examined in detail using magnification, transmitted light and raking light in preparation for the exhibition 'Fra Angelico to Leonardo: Italian Renaissance Drawings'.* Lifted by slitting guards with a scalpel. Debris removed using a poultice of Culminal (nonionic cellulose ether). Adhesive residue removed with cotton wool swabs barely dampened with warm water. Pressed locally. All old repairs kept in place and weak areas supported with thin Japanese tissue toned with Winsor and Newton artist's watercolours (organic,inorganic pigments,gum arabic) and wheat starch adhesive. Pressed between felts. Inlaid into BM inlay paper with strips of Japanese tissue and Culminal (nonionic cellulose ether). Pressed as before. Object mounted into a Royal Perspex verso overthrow with 6ply Heritage 100% Cotton Museum board (4ply backboard and middle board of same).
