Treatment; 13 Sep 2007; - Remove excess adhesive - Repair hilt as necessary - Check all repairs - Clarify detail of chape - To be transferred to Franks House; Metals

Reason: Storage
Description: Sword and scabbard were cleaned and degreased and excess adhesive and wax remains removed using a paint brush, cotton wool swabs, Acetone and White Spirit (composition variable - petroleum distillate). Some loosened flakes were consolidated or adhered using Paraloid B72 (ethyl methacrylate copolymer). The sticking out scabbard parts were secured to the blade/scabbard each with a bridge of microballoons (silica or phenolic resin) and Paraloid B72. The excess adhesive around the hilt was removed mechanically using a scalpell or pin vice where possible without risking loss of the mineralised handle substance (as opposed to the description not wood but horn?). The hilt fragments were joint using Paraloid B72 and a filler of microballoons and Paraloid 72 was used to fill the gap between the break edges. Retouched filling with acrylic colours. As the sword goes into storage the handle has not been attached to the blade with regard to the very vague join.
