Description
Organics: Surface clean - vacuum and soft brush - greatly improved visual appearance, removing alot of surface dust. A couple of the single detached plates could be repositioned on the main body. They were attached by a 'hinge' of Reemay (non woven polyester) coloured with acrylic paints, and adhered to the inside of the metal plates using HMG Paraloid B72 (methyl ethyl methacrlylate) diluted with acetone Following various experiments with applying some form of external overlays to provide greater strength to the textile elements (net overlays, inserting colour reemay patches between textile and metal...), it was decided that such physical intervention was probably going to cause more damage that good - and would also prevent monitoring and treatment of metal rivets. Instead, by providing a very good support board and internal support to prevent flexing and movement of the jacket, and requesting that handling be kept to absolute minimum, the long term preservation of the jacket could be maintained, particularly for study. For maximum visual information, the jacket was displayed with one front closed and the other front open. An internal support was made to help maintain the shape of the jacket on the closed side, made of polyester wadding covered in silk fabric - soft, non abrasive. A board of Hexlite (formerly Aerolam F board (glass fibre, epoxy laminate on aluminiun honeycombe) was covered with polyester wadding and Plastazote (polyethylene) foam, with wells shaped to the object. Final covering of dyed cotton fabric. Extensive photographs were taken and prints to be kept with the object - so reduce the need for opening and turning over the jacket.
