Description: The shoe was vacuumed under low suction to remove surface dirt. It was humidified using Goretex (polytetrafluoro ethylene,polyester laminate) and stuffed with acid free tissue when flexible enough. After reshaping the back seam was reinstated using Polyester thread in a sympathetic colour. An insert to support the remains of the shoe was made from custom dyed cotton lawn (Solophenyl (azo dye) stuffed with Polyester wadding. A mount was made for the shoe to minimise handling during examination. The mount was made from Correx (polypropylene/polyethylene copolymer,corrugated sheet, with two layers of Plastazote (polyethylene); the top layer having a shoe shaped well cut out of it. The well was coated with Mowilith DMC2 (polyvinyl acetate/dibutyl maleate copolymer,cellulose ether)and allowed to dry. Natural coloured cotton jersey was used to cover the mount, ironing it into the well. The number of the shoe was attached to the mount so that it could be seen.
