Description
Cleaned with Wishab sponge (vulcanized latex, filler). A vacuum cleaner and soft brush were used to remove remains of Wishab sponge (vulcanized latex, filler). Tried to fix back flakes by locally humidifying lifting leather with Goretex (polytetrafluoro ethylene, polyester laminate)and distilled water. The Goretex was kept away from the surface with Plastazote (polyethylene) windows and covered with clingfilm. The hide was thick and did not soften very well by this method. However some pieces were softened and fixed back with concentrated Vinamul 3252 (vinyl acetate, ethylene copolymer) inserted below the flake on a Melinex (polyester) spatula. Other pieces were flexible enough to be manouvred back into place and secured with Vinamul 3252 applied on a Melinex spatula. These were supported in position while drying. A fragile area along one side was supported with Japanese tissue / 2.5% Klucel G (hydroxypropyl cellulose) / IMS / glass microballoons fill applied with a spatula and toned in with Liquitex acrylic artist colour (composition unknown) . Small white paint? splashes on the surface were removed as much as possible with a scalpel (distilled water, acetone and Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol) were also tried on cotton wool buds but found to be ineffective). Broken leather srap was repaired with japanese tissue toned in with Liquitex acrylic artist colour (composition unknown)and fixed in place with Mowilith 50 (polyvinyl acetate). It was decided not to retwist leather to its original state since this would cause tension and may cause the strap to break again.
