Description: The front of the painting was covered with aluminium foil and parcel tape and a cast of the surface was taken with Araldtite CW2215 (foamed epoxy). The painting was then supported on this whilst it was turned over and the modern plaster backing removed manually. After complete removal of the modern plaster the reverse surface of the painting was consolidated with 10% Paraloid B72 (ethyl methacrylate copolymer) in Acetone (propan-1-one/dimethyl ketone) and fills inserted as necessary into detaching areas with 20% Paraloid B72 in Acetone/Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol,methanol) 1/1 with Microballoons (silica or phenolic resin) (in a ratio of 1/1 resin to filler vol/vol). A separation layer of the same mixture was then applied, in stages, to the back of the painting to approximately 15mm thickness. The painting was then adhered to Aerolam F board (glass fibre,epoxy laminate on aluminiun honeycombe) using Araldite 2005 (epoxy). The painting was then turned over again and areas of modern plaster removed from over the original surface. Where necessary the surface of fills was taken back below the level of the painting, skims of Polyfilla fine surface (calcium carbonate, polyvinyl acetate) were applied around the edges of the painting and coloured with Rowney's Cryla colours (acrylic). Fills were inserted as necessary on the painted surface using a mixture of Microballoons and impalpable marble (1/1) in 20% Paraloid B72 in Acetone/IMS 1/1 and the surface retouched with Rowney's Cryla colours.
