Treatment; 15 Nov 1996; Remove from mounts where necessary. Remove adhesive and debris and stains if possible.; Western Art on Paper

Reason: Storage
Description: Majority of backing removed by splitting board then paring to a thin layer. Some adhesive removed with heated spatula - very slow. Most of remaining adhesive removed with toluene:acetone 1:1 and cotton wool. Care had to be taken as red pigment on recto soluble in acetone therefore some adhesive still remains on verso. Paper debris removed from recto by paring with a scalpel. Remaining adhesive softened with toluene vapour and removed with crepe square. Humidified over capillary matting and Gore-Tex in a chamber and pressed.
