Treatment; 10 Jun 1996; Remove from backing. Seperate laminated areas as far as possible. Repair.; Western Art on Paper

Reason: Storage; Publication/Catalogue
Description: Removed whole from mount. Released each fragment from backing paper by undercutting adhesive tape, examined and surface cleaned where necessary. Treated each fragment seperately by applying damp blotters to verso under weighted glass for an average of two hours before removing residual tape and seperating layers where laminated together. Majority of fragments has more than one layer, all with stray fibres and overlaps. Realigned and repaired all separate layers with Japanese paper tabs (pre-toned with Winsor and Newton artist's watercolours (organic,inorganic pigments,gum arabic)) using Abra starch (wheat starch) paste. Pressed dry. When dry, removed fibres and surface deposits where they obliterated text only, to leave evidence as possible use as cartonnage. Pressed lightly. Joined fragments over light table. Mounted between glass in three seperate frames. Tabbed numerous small unplaced fragments onto paper and placed inside plastic box.
