Description
Loose dust disturbed with a sable brush and removed with a low suction vacuum cleaner fitted with a flexible rubber tube. Further cleaning achieved with a Wishab sponge (vulcanized latex, filler) gently manipulated over the soiled surfaces. Where access was available to the damaged edges of a flaking gessoed and pigmented area, loose debris was removed from between the sheared layers with a Melinex/metal spatula. Full strength Vinamul 3252 (vinyl acetate, ethylene copolymer) in distilled water was then used to effect a repair. The adhesive was painted on to the upper surface of a Melinex metal spatula, which was then inserted between the parted layers. Whilst applying gentle finger pressure to the lifting area, the spatula was withdrawn, charging the underside with adhesive and relocating the flake in its original position. Delicate lifting pigment relaid with one application of 3% Klucel G (hydroxypropyl cellulose) in IMS applied to beneath the insecure areas, which had previously been treated with IMS as a wetting agent, with a fine sable brush. Contact with substrate effected with gentle finger pressure.
