Description: The inks were checked for fugitivity and were deemed stable enough for a wet lining treatment. The paintings were lined with xuan paper using a thin wheat starch paste and were dried and flattened on the drying board. A mount to best complement the painting (in both size and colour) was designed and mounting silks chosen and lined accordingly. Once dry, both the mounting silks and the painting were removed from the drying board. The silk was cut into carefully proportioned components and joined to the painting using wheat starch paste and xuan paper joining strips to form the surrounding borders. The scroll’s long edges were scored and turned in, and paper pockets to later facilitate top stave and bottom roller attachment were applied to the top and bottom of the mount. A large backing paper was prepared (joined sheets forming 2 layers of xuan paper, lined with thin wheat starch paste). A cover silk and other final backing components were prepared from lined silk. The cover silk and final backing paper were applied to the scroll’s verso after humidification, adhered with thin wheat starch paste. The assembled scroll was then adhered to the drying board by means of a margin of thicker wheat starch paste. After 9 months, the scroll was released from the drying board and burnished with a smooth stone. A top stave and bottom roller with zhoutou (roller knobs) were applied with wheat starch paste and a braid and ribbon attached.
