Description
As no treatment reports were found, it is suggested that repairs have been carried out before the object came into the museum, possibly during its use life or later on by an art dealer (?). This assumption is also based on the fact that the rather crude fills are not soluble in conventional solvents which suggest that Asian lacquer has been used as the adhesive component of the fill. Examination of the various surfaces of this object under UV light did present a rather incoherent picture and did not contribute to clarify the nature of the fills/repairs. It was therefore decided not to touch the fills, e.g. in order to attempt to improve the visual appearance of the fills and the damaged adjacent surfaces. The conservation treatment focused on cleaning and stabilisation of the mobile areas on the base (part F). The dust, which accumulated on the surface, was removed by using a soft brush and vacuum suction. The surfaces were then wiped with a small amount of White Spirit (composition variable - petroleum distillate) applied on soft cotton cloth. Lifting lacquer flakes were re-adhered to the substrate with 10% Paraloid B72 (ethyl methacrylate copolymer) in Acetone (propan-1-one/dimethyl ketone). The crack in the rim area of the base (part F) was filled with a fill made of 20% B72 in IMS (Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol)) and glass micro balloons and black pigment.
