Description
The back of the object was consolidated with Raccanello Acrylic silane E55050 diluted with acetone (5ml Raccanello 20ml acetone) were applied to the powdery surface with a pipette. Undiluted Racannello E55050 was applied with a syringe to flakes and fissures (2ml applied). The following day a further 5ml of Pacanello E55050 diluted with acetone was applied to the surface as some areas were still powdery. The pigment on the front surface of the stela was tested to see if would be affected by poulticing. A poultice of blotting paper HMSO code No1-41 was applied using a bristle brush and distilled water. Six layers of paper were applied. The object was wrapped with cling film to prevent rapid evaporation of the water from the poultice. At the end of the day the cling film was perforated to allow for a slow evaporation of the water. The folowing morning samples were taken from the poultice paper to test. Another poultice was applied and left for 24hrs without covering in cling film. Another poultice was applied and left overnight. Red spots appeared on the reverse of the stela and black spots appeared on the front face. The red spots were tested for mould but the results were inconclusive, the black spots were analysed and found to be mould. The object was left to dry and it was decided not to apply any further poultices. A 20% solution of Panaclean 718, an aqueous solution of the sodium salt of dichlorophen chelating agent and anti-corrosive agent was applied with cotton wool swabs to the black spots.
