Treatment; 07 Feb 2013; Remount for Gallery 1 exhibition (Kings Library).; Western Art on Paper

Description: The papyrus was examined under magnification (x 10) before the binding tape was peeled back and the glass removed. Loose fibres and small pieces of debris were visible on the surface. With the glass removed it was possible to lay back the loose fibres using Abra starch (wheat starch) paste applied with a fine brush. Small deposits and debris were picked off the surface with tweezers or brush. The unsupported left edge of the papyrus was supported with Japanese paper tabs [pre-toned with Aquarell watercolours] using Abra starch (wheat starch) paste, on the verso where possible. As the piece of paper to which the papyrus has been attached is very thick it was decided make up the same thickness around the edges of the board in order that the glass could sit more evenly and safely on the papyrus and thus make the mount more stable. Therefore strips of blotting paper, the same thickness as papyrus and paper, were attached to the backboard edges of the four sides with Abra starch (wheat starch) before replacing newly cleaned glass over the whole. It was decided to leave the white lettering '10182.3' etched on the old glass in situ. The whole was bound with Filmoplast T self-adhesive linen tape, brown over white.
