Description: Traces of wax/moulding materials were removed with a cocktail stick or scalpel (no. 15 blade). Loose traces of wax were brushed away with a sable brush and any residue that remained adhered to the seal surface was brushed gently with a stencil brush so that it did not stand proud of the seal surface. Seal 2012,6003.18 has a small section at the base which is of a lighter colour than the body of the seal, and which may have indicated a loose area or a repair. The area was examined under magnification and proved to be part of the object (possibly damaged through an impact) and not a repair. It is stable at present. An attempt was made to introduce a very low percentage (2%) solution of Paraloid B72 (methyl ethyl methacrlylate) in 50:50 acetone (propan-1-one/dimethyl ketone): Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol,methanol) using a glass micro-pipette, between the main body of the seal and the lighter area but none of the solution penetrated. On seal 2012,6003.37, a large area of loss had been filled with a white waxy material. This was left in place. Waxy deposits on seal 2012,6003.14 had penetrated into a porous (or damaged) area of loss. Investigation of this area resulted in the loosening of a fragment of material ( of c.1mm in length). No further wax was removed and the loose splinter was sealed back in place with 3% Paraloid B72 in acetone. Old adhesive on seal 2012,6003.16 (W79) proved to be soluble in acetone, and was removed with an acetone-dampened swab.
