- Description

Medallion as amulet (?): a translucent green-glass medallion, circular, with, on one face only, a yellow thread extending on a diagonal across the face. On obverse, the profile of a bearded head, presumably Zeus, though the impression is too worn for certain identification. On reverse, within a square, profile of Eros (?) facing left. Poor impressions. Certainly made by striking or stamping with a die.

- Bibliography:
W. M. F. Petrie, 'Glass Stamps and Weights' (1926) p. 2. Petrie remarks of the yellow threads "such streaks occur in a large part of the disks up to no. 55". He suggests, though on what authority is not apparent, that discs with such markings were used as currency of a sort. As it is certain that the yellow thread of this medallion was intentionally applied and not an accident, it obviously had some such function.
