A mat / small rug, square; cut pile wool weave. A large cross ('+') shaped motif in the middle of a blue mottled ground. Cream, brown, green, orange and blue geometric patterning within cross motif. Motif surrounded by bands, the same colours used in the patterning, with a leaf-shaped motif at the end of each limb. Guard comprises geometric and animal motifs framed by narrower borders with diagonal lines. Two-toned brown woollen warp visible as fringe at each end; no longer plied; some worn away. Beige cotton twill woven tape (3.5 cms) on reverse side at ends.

Dimitrije Mitrinovic (1887 - 1953) was a Serbian philosopher who made a collection of Balkan (and other) textiles while living in London (1916 until his death); see Eu1993,08.1 to 31 (Balkan textiles), As1993,25.1 to 4 (Turkish textiles) and As1993,26.1 to 6 (Chinese and Indian textiles). The New Atlantis Foundation, established to ensure the survival of his work, wish that the donation be known as the 'Mitrinovic collection'.
