- Curator's comments
- This work uses for its base a copy of the Journal Officiel de la République Tunisienne from 1963. The artist focuses on the polticial history of Tunisia. This piece in particular concerns Independence from the French, declared in 1956 but with the retention of Bizerte. The significance of the date 1963 is that on the 15th of October that year (known as the fête de l'evacuation) the last French soldier departed from Tunisia. The last French base in Bizerte was liberated. The complete indepencence of Tunisia followed.
The book is stitched with red thread and remains open. As described by the artist: "The book is open on the right at the speech of the President of the council addressed to President Bourguiba emphasizing the support of the people and their wish for their country to be liberated from French occupation. On the other side (left) Bourguiba is replying to the speech. In the centre a crown of flowers, made from torn pages, stitched with red thread and which then regroups the different measures that would then take place following this announcement.’ Ammar describes why this is important to her. ‘For me this is a symbolic reading on a major event in the political history of Tunisia. This is the foundation for the new republic, now utterly sovereign and independent. This moment also holds the hopes for the future which, despite what was to come, will resist the vagaries of time."
