- Curator's comments
- Muraywid makes artists' books and in this example she has worked with the celebrated Lebanese poet Venus Khoury-Ghata, (b. 1937) inspired by Le livre des suppliques https://www.mercuredefrance.fr/Catalogue/poesie/le-livre-des-suppliques).
Words from the poem are inscribed in Khoury-Ghata’s own hand on several of the folios of the work. As Muraywid explained: "the work is not intended as an illustration.. its how a poet and an artist deal with the same obsession…how to go in spite of death…how to continue living, when all these people that are parts of us exist no more".
Both Khoury-Ghata and Muraywid are preoccupied by the state of the Middle East and so much conflict, Muraywid in particular about the conflict in Syria.
