Curator's comments
Kahraman's work is mostly painted on linen; this is a rare work on paper. Her style is influenced by Islamic miniatures, East Asian calligraphic traditions and the Italian Renaissance. She draws on her own experience, often of her native Iraq, with observations of the Iraq war and of gender in Islam. This work shows the bodies of women wearing black chador or niqab veils hanging from the branches of a tree.
