- Curator's comments
- The photographs in this series are from an unidentified archive created around the period of the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948, known by Palestinians as the Nakba (‘catastrophe’). The rectangles around the subject of each photo call to mind the square that appears when ‘tagging’ a photograph on social networking sites such as Facebook. The rectangles around each subject also call to mind the Ottoman practice of ‘decapitating’ figures in miniature paintings by adding a single line on the neck. In TAG 09, both the figure and the building in the photographs are typical of the Palestinian landscape where the artist grew up, and with which he identifies.
