- Long-haired man milking a cow, from an album apparently compiled in the 19th century
Mid-17th century
In the early 16th century a vignette of a man milking a cow would have only been included as part of a larger composition, whereas by the 17th century such scenes had been excerpted from the context of narrative illustration and were considered fitting subjects in their own right. To modern eyes the figure's long hair and dress-like robe seem feminine. However, young Persian men of the 17th century were often portrayed as long-haired and here the shading on the figure's face, the strong hands and arms and the lack of earrings or other jewellery strongly suggest that the figure is a man.
