- Prince Khurram attacking a lion, after an illustration to the Windsor Castle Padshahnama
Mughal India, 18th century
Opaque watercolour and gold on paper
The celebrated 1610 lion hunt of Jahangir in which one of his men was attacked by a lion is represented by two Jahangir-period paintigns in Princes, Poets & Paladins (cat. nos. 101-2) . By 1640 the scene was reinterpreted by Balchand and in this copy so that the focus of the scene is on Prince Khurram, the future Shah Jahan, instead of on his brother and father.
