- Curator's comments
- The story of Layli and Majnun held a particular attraction for Indian artists. Ascetics, both Hindu and Muslim, were also a popular artistic subject, as were the many indigenous and imaginary wild animals of India. This painting may never have been included in a manuscript of Nizami's Khamsa (Quintet), but would have evoked the story of the star-crossed lovers.
