Elephant and Riders from the Lucknow Album
Inscribed 'picture of Mohan, work of Banar'? and, above, 'Jahangir ' Mughal India, late 17th-18th century
Ink, colours and gold on paper
The bull of this happy band of elephants is distinguished both by his size and the quantity of 'jewellery' with which he is adorned. His single tush is ringed with gold, and hold bells are hung at this throat, in his ear and on a chain around his girth. The riders hold goads, perhaps also made of gold.
