- Woman playing the lute
Mughal India, late 16th century
Opaque watercolour on paper
The chair, dress and hat in this painting probably derive from a European source, most likely a print of an allegorical subject. From the 1570s onward European diplomatic and religious missions visited the Mughal court. The paintings and prints they brought with them inspired Mughal artists to copy both compositions and technique such as modelling and perspective.
