Mughal India, c. 1610
Opaque watercolour on paper
As in Iran, Mughal artists painted many single-page portraits of courtiers, princes, and other firgures for inclusion in albums. However, a far greater emphasis was placed on individual characterisation in Mughal painting as demostrated here by the distinctive nose, moustache and sideburns of this figure.
