- Curator's comments
- Formerly displayed for comparison with bevelled rim bowl from Choga Mish, ANE 136972. These distinctive vessels were in widespread use at settlements from the middle Euphrates region of Syria as far east as Tepe Yahya in south-west Iran yet are regarded as a hallmark of the Late Uruk period. They are commonly referred to in the literature as mouldmade but this is in error as they are handmade. They are also often regarded as standardised containers, perhaps for issuing rations, but there is no evidence to support this interpretation of function and the sizes vary considerably. They probably served as easily made and easily disposable multi-purpose containers akin to moden plastic containers. Comparanda: Freestone and Gaimster eds 1997a, chapter 6 on pp 50-55 for an introduction; Millard 1988a for a discussion of possible function; Kalsbeek 1980a.
