- Curator's comments
- This object is in a non-Achaemenid style for a lion's face. This was probably a harness ornament.
Circular rings made of gold wire form part of the frontlet of the Oxus gold horse model 1957-1214.1 (chariot) and 1897-1231.8 (horse) and are probably intended to represent circular plaques, or 'phalerae'. A wooden disc from a tomb at Pazyryk in Siberia with a similarly stylized lion's mask is classified as a harness ornament (Rudenko, 'Frozen Tombs from Siberia: the Pazyryk burials of Iron Age horsemen' 1970, pl. 138A) as are similar elements from barrow 4 at Pazyryk (Rudenko 1970: pls. 111D and F).
The object was sent for moulding by Mr A.G. Prescott between 11-27 March 1975 (WAA, 'Objects to Lab' book).
