Circular dome-shaped shield, made of rhinoceros hide coated with black lacquer. Gilded reversed inscription in relief on the boss and gilt inscription on interior (of the basmala, repeated). Two hand-straps with gilt loops attached to blue velvet pad on interior.

Register: 'India. Circular shield of rhinoceros hide, bossed in the middle and ornamented with inscriptions in relief: border of wavy lines; the whole has been coated with black lacquer, minutely [illegible] in gold, and the inscription has been gilt. Four gilt bosses in the form of flowers. Inside gilt inscription of similar design on black ground. Two handles with gilt loops. Presented by James Gurney Esq. (5 Pall Mall). 1884.'
