- Curator's comments
- This woodcut comes from Pietro Aretino`s `La Vita di Caterina Vergine e Martire`, published by Marcolini in 1541. The design of the composition has recently been attributed to Giorgio Vasari rather than Francesco Salivati by A. Nova, `Francesco Salviati e gli editori, 1: Le incisioni`, in C. Monbeig Goguel (ed.), exhib. cat., Francesco Salviati o la Bella Maniera, 1998, p.66, and C. Monbeig Goguel in Ibid, no.136, p.327. Aretino`s hagiography contains two other woodcuts representing the eponymous saint`s martyrdom and mystical marriage, the latter also in the BM (1874,0808.1365).
