- Curator's comments
- Related to the painting by Parmigianino in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna (inv. 588), where the figures are in a landscape, not an interior. The interior resembles that in Monogrammist IQV's 'Mystic Marriage of St Catherine' (1866,1114.791). Cf. the preparatory drawing by Parmigianino at the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. 1517E; A. E. Popham, 'Catalogue of Drawings by Parmigianino', 1971, vol. I, p. 68, no. 79). The direct model for the Fontainebleau etching was probably Giulio Bonasone's engraving of Parmigianino's composition (Bartsch XV.126.61). Jenkins 2017.
