- Curator's comments
- This pen and ink sketch is characterised by is scratchy handling of the pen and the rapidly delineated forms. Vey related the composition to Van Dyck’s painting of the ‘Holy Fmaily with Saint John and Elizabeth’ in Turin (Vey 1962, no. 116), which it compares with in the overall format but not their figures’ placement. Yet, Vey dismissed the present drawing as the work of a copyist though it is not clear what they would have been copying. For the present, the old attribution to Van Dyck until further information on the copied painting comes to light.
