- Curator's comments
- The portrait of St Teresa of Avila (1515-82), listed as “312 Vera effigies Sta Teresia” in the catalogue of the collection of Sir Hans Sloane, is one of a group of five (also including Molière, Corneille and two deleted items) for which no provenance is given. She was a Carmelite nun, active in the reform of her order, establishing numerous convents in Spain. Here the Holy Spirit in the shape of a dove descends in a cloud and casts rays of gold around her head. As observed by Jacinto Regalado (written communication), the painting is derived from the only portrait of St Teresa made during her lifetime, by Juan de la Miseria, a Discalced Carmelite friar. That portrait, dating from around 1576, when St Teresa was 61, is now in the Covent of St Teresa in Avila, Spain.
Listed in the 'Register of Oil Paintings etc in the BM' compiled by Edward Croft Murray (P&D Register cupboard) on p.114, with a note that it was thought to be 17th century.
The original Sloane catalogue indicated it came with two other similar works but they are not in Prints and Drawings. This one, SLPictures.312 was transferred to Prints and Drawings from the Dept of Antiquities on May 9, 1846.
