It can hardly be doubted that this design was intended for a pendant to be made for Queen Jane Seymour, between the time of her marriage to Henry VIII on 30 May 1536 and her death on 24 October 1537 (see also SL,5308.117, evidently a companion to the present drawing). Although such a jewel was not in the inventory made after the Queen's death (see ‘Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic of the reign of Henry VIII’, edited by J. Gairdner, London, xii, pt. 2, 1891, p. 340, no. 973), this does reveal that the Queen possessed a pomander whose design incorporated the Queen's and King's initials (listed as 'It[em] Greate pomander of golde with hand and cro[w]ne' (British Library, Royal Ms. 7 c.xvi, fol. 16)).
