- Lit: J.A. Gere and P. Pouncey, 'Italian drawings in the BM, Artists working in Rome', London, 1983, no. 115
Gere & Pouncey 1983
The drawing was until recently on an old mount together with another, a 'Vanitas', both being attributed to Agostino Carracci (SL,5236.99).
The gesture of the hands and what seem to be indications of smoke or flames near the l. foot of the figure suggest a personification of Winter, often represented as an old man sitting by a fire warming his hands.
